  • The move from Ethereum (ETH) to the PoS model raises major concerns in the crypto community regarding censorship.
  • Vitalik Buterin, founder of Ethereum, talks about his idea to avoid censorship.
  • Currently, more than 25% of Ethereum blocks comply with OFAC sanctions to Tornado Cash and other addresses.

The latest update of Ethereum (ETH) to the PoS model has generated a growing concern within the community about crypto censorship and centralization. This, due to the problems that represent the limitations imposed on the validators by the regulatory entities. Recall that some of the wallets of Tornado Cash, the cryptocurrency mixing platform, were added to the OFAC list. Consequently, many validators have decided to censor sanctioned addresses, which has been viewed with concern in the crypto environment.

On this, Vitalik Buterin, the renowned co-founder of Ethereum, has decided to give your opinion on the topic. He points out that validators should ideally have free rein when building blocks. However, this must be limited to avoid the possibilities of abuse, such as censorship. Thus, proposes the idea of creating “partial auctions” at the time of block construction.

What Is Vitalik Buterin’s Proposal To Bypass Crypto Censorship Within The Ethereum Network About?

The election of the validator in charge of creating the block is done through auctions. The winner will have the obligation to build or order the pending transactions, in exchange for a reward (MEV). This gives you the opportunity to “skip” transactions that should not be executed, such as those related to Tornado Cash penalties.

Vitalik Buterin’s proposal is to carry out partial block auctions. In this way, the winner of the auction will have the right to decide only “some things” of the block. These can range from building the first half of the block, to reordering transactions and restricting the proponent.

The Different Ways To Achieve The Ethereum Co-Founder’s Proposal

That said, Vitalik’s proposal requires a new structure for the PoS model. For this, several solutions are proposed. The first is the use of inclusion lists, whereby the proponent provides a list of transactions that “must be included”. This cannot be denied unless the validator has enough transactions to fill the block without them. In this way, it would leave the censored transactions to another validator.

The second proposal is the use of suffixes for the block. Thus, the proponent could add transactions to the end of the block without the validator being aware of its content. However, this may be too friendly to proponents and validators may choose to refuse to build blocks for them in the future. This could be solved through the use of zero knowledge (ZK) technology.
