With the successful merger of the Goerli testnet, the Ethereum Merge seems closer than ever. Like Ropsten and Sepolia, Goerli is now a Proof of Stake (PoS) blockchain. In this way, it is suggested that there will be no more delays in the tentative date for the Ethereum update, set for September 19.
Through his Twitter account, developer Preston Van Loon, as well as other Ethereum enthusiasts, announced the success of the Goerli merger. For his part, Tim Beikon, the lead developer of Ethereum, shared a screenshot as soon as the switch to PoS occurred, showing a script. To give it a more emotional touch, he presented it in the form of a panda with the legend “POS Activated”.
How Long Until The Ethereum Merge?
Once the testnet merger is complete, preparations will begin to perform the same upgrade on the Ethereum mainnet. With the Merge, it is expected to reduce the energy consumption of the blockchain considerably. At the same time, it will be possible to improve its scalability, security and long-term sustainability.
Once the merger with the mainnetl is complete, the next step will be the multi-stage shard upgrade. It will consist of distributing the Ethereum database horizontally across the network. chain of fragments, decreasing the load on the core network. This will allow a better distribution of data storage requirements, making rollups cheaper and nodes easier to operate. Although the Merge is close, this is just getting started.
