  • Researchers at the University of Illinois have discovered a critical vulnerability in the Lightning Network.
  • If not fixed, it may lead to several types of attacks on the Bitcoin (BTC) network.
  • What will you do to solve it? Is the Bitcoin blockchain secure?

A group of researchers from the University of Illinois have discovered a potentially critical vulnerability in the Bitcoin scalability protocol, Lightning Network. This would make the network susceptible to attack by network validators, putting stability and funds at risk.

However, it is unlikely that an attack of this magnitude will exist on the Bitcoin blockchain, as it would involve attackers taking control of several validators at the same time . It wouldn't be the first time such a vulnerability has been discovered in the Lightning network. Only through the joint investigation of several groups has it been possible to take precautions against the possibility of different types of attacks on the Bitcoin network.

What Is About The Bitcoin Lightning Network Vulnerability?

According to a research group document, it is possible to steal 750 BTC using only thirty validators, through a “zombie attack”. In this way, validators could block cryptocurrencies passing through them. The only way to avoid this type of attack is to disconnect the network protocol.

Additionally, coordinated double-spend attacks could be carried out, obtaining more profit as a result. However, these types of attacks have simple solutions to solve, re-verifying false transactions. This could greatly affect the performance of the Lightning Network protocol, and therefore, the operation of the Bitcoin blockchain.
