South Korean Government Submits Draft With Ethical Principles For The Metaverse

The South Korean Ministry of Science and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has proposed the first joint report of ethical principles for the metaverse. It is a draft titled “Expanded Virtual World Ethics Principles” that was released after a forum this month. It involved 17 stakeholders, including South Korean government ministries, private metaverse players, legal advisers, and other related organizations.

The discussion forum sought, among other things, to promote public-private partnerships to create regulatory legislation for virtual space. This includes regulations on virtual property rights and protection of young people within the metaverse. The South Korean government considers it necessary to address these kinds of issues, as interest in Web 3.0 increases.

What Does The Draft Of Ethical Principles For These Digital Spaces Contain?

The published document is available on the forum where different actors from the South Korean government participated. Within it, it says that “The draft of the ethical principles of the extended virtual world is based on the unique characteristics of the extended virtual world. That is, it focuses on the virtual self, the immersive experience, and the economic system.”

It seeks, among other things, to address issues related to intellectual and digital property, fraud and theft related to cryptocurrencies and NFT. It also addresses the issue of harassment, racism and verbal abuse within the metaverse, and much more. On the other hand, when dealing with what the Minister of Science and ICT, Lim Hyesook, called “an unexplored digital continent with undefined potential”. This first draft will remain in constant development, as new technologies and projects are included.

South Korea Paves The Way For The Metaverse Based On 8 Principles

The draft from the South Korean Ministry of Science and ICT establishes eight basic principles to preserve ethical values ​​within the metaverse. These are responsibility, inclusion, protection of private data, fairness, authenticity, autonomy, reciprocity and respect for privacy. According to Seungmin Lee, a professor at Sungkyunkwan University, legal and social norms are currently being discussed to resolve conflicts within the virtual world based on these values.
